Strong Stuff The property auction industry is going through something of an unexpected revolution. Having accepted for centuries the tried and tested method of charging the vendor of a property between one and two percent commission on a successful auction sale, all of a sudden an American outfit flies over the pond, sets up their own gig (or five to be exact) and completely rewrites the rule book by giving the vendor "free entry" and charging them "zero commission".

LIVERPOOL-based property agent Sutton Kersh achieved a 90% sold figure after raising more than £8.3m in receipts from on of its biggest auctions.

Following a bumper year in 2006, with sales totalling in excess of £37m, the Cotton Street-based auction house also held what is believed to be the longest city auction on record.
